We are pleased to announce the launch of the 2026 UN I (Basic) and UN II (Intermediate) Language Examination Pilot. This year, thanks to the support of l’Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie (OIF), the pilot will offer at no cost for participants:

 

  • UN Level I Exam in French, and
  • UN Level II Exams in Arabic, Chinese, and Russian.

 

These exams provide you with an opportunity to formally validate your language progress and earn a certificate confirming your achievement of UN I (Basic) or UN Level II (Intermediate) Language Competence under the UN Language FrameworkExternal Link Icon SVG for Clear Web Navigation. Please note that this exam does not replace the Language Proficiency Examination (LPE), which is the UN Level III exam required to receive the language allowance.

All exams will be online and remotely proctored on a secure digital platform.

Space is limited. Early registration is encouraged.

 

Who can enrol?

To be eligible, you must:

 

  • Be staff members of the UN Secretariat or of a UN system agency, fund, or programme on the date of the exam.

 

  • Have completed:
    • at least 240 hours of instruction for UN Level I, or
    • at least 600 hours of instruction for UN Level II,
      in the relevant language—either through a UN Language Programme (eg. IOM Language Programme) or an equivalent course of study.

 

You do not need to be currently enrolled in a language course to apply.
