What is the RMO Learning Path? 

The RMO Learning Path is a structured, competency-based learning journey designed to build and strengthen the professional capacity of RMOs and will also serve as a preparatory path for those aspiring to be RMOs. 

Who developed the RMO Learning Path? 

It was developed collaboratively by RMOs who participated in the focus group discussions across all regions in close consultation with: 

  • Department of Human Resources  
  • Department of Financial and Administrative Management  
  • Department of Information and Communications Technology 
  • Supply Chain Division 


Why was the Learning Path developed? 

It was developed to: 

  • Provide learning support for existing and aspiring RMOs 
  • Enhance mobility and career growth of RMOs
  • Promote consistent resource management standards across the organization
  • Strengthen the operational strength and agility of IOM region sand missions, to the great benefit of the Organization. 

What are the different Phases of the RMO Learning Path?

Phase 1: RMO Preparatory Training: targets colleagues who are positioning themselves to take on the role of an RMO. Goal: Provide aspiring RMOs with a basic orientation to the role and responsibilities, helping them prepare for a future role as an RMO.

Phase 2: Foundational is a year-long learning phase that targets existing RMOs.Goal: Equip RMOs with essential technical knowledge across core functional areas,, human skills and IOM's areas of work.

Phase 3: Continuous learning phase that targets existing RMOs consists of training courses from which RMOs may select what is relevant for them to take.  Goal: Promote a culture of ongoing development tailored to evolving operational realities.


Is the learning path mandatory for all RMOs?

Participation in this learning path will be mandatory for all RMOs.  

Can I join only some modules?  

Yes. Learning journeys will be personalized based on the scores of an initial assessment, which will determine the specific modules each RMO is required to complete. 

Who can participate in the RMO Learning Path?

Existing RMOs and Aspiring RMOs. 

Can I participate in the existing RMO Learning journey if I am an RMO a.i. or OiC?


Staff members serving in an a.i. (Acting Incumbent) or OiC (Officer-in-Charge) capacity may attend virtual instructor-led trainings, except for Human Skills (soft skills) sessions, as existing RMOs will be given priority due to limited seats.


I do not have an RMO title but I perform the full duties of an RMO. Can I participate in the existing RMO Learning Journey?

If you do not hold an RMO title but perform the full duties of an RMO on a full time basis (not occasionally) you may be eligible to join the RMO Learning Journey. Please provide an email from your supervisor confirming this, as spaces and resources are limited.

How is the learning delivered? 

The learning path will be delivered through a blended approach combining: 

  • Live virtual instructor-led sessions 
  • Self-paced online modules 
  • Communities of practice and Peer exchanges  
  • Coaching and mentoring opportunities


Are recordings available for the training?
No. Please note that there are no recordings available for soft skills/human skills training.


Do I need to attend all days of the training?
Yes. To participate, you must register and attend all scheduled days of the training (e.g., all 3 consecutive days or 4 days, depending on the Human skills training.


How are seats allocated for the Human skills training?
All Human skills training have limited capacity, seats are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis with priority given to existing RMOs


Will I receive a certificate or recognition? 

Yes! Participants who complete the modules will receive: 

  • A digital badge awarded upon achieving a certain milestone, ex. cascading training to peers and colleagues/knowledge sharing. 
  • Certificate awarded upon successful completion of required modules and workshops, as determined by the pre-assessment report and feedback submitted for each e-module or session will serve as a prerequisite for the overall RMO Learning Path certification. 
  • Recognition within their Region 
  • Opportunities for career growth. 

Will participants be assessed on technical knowledge topics?
Yes, participants will be assessed as follows:

Pre-assessment is completed before the training and will be used to personalize each learner’s journey by identifying required modules based on the assessment report. 

Post assessment will be used to assess the relevance of the content and the level of knowledge acquired. 


How many attempts do I have when taking the pre-assessments?
While there are unlimited attempts available in WAVE Learn, only the result of your first attempt will be considered final. For example, if you fail on your first attempt, you will be required to take the training for that module.


If I pass all the pre-assessment exams, what happens next?
You will be cleared as having completed the foundational phase and can move on to the continuous learning phase.


Will more modules be added for the pre-assessment?
Yes. You will be notified whenever new pre-assessment modules are added.

Who can participate in live virtual instructor-led human skills training/workshops?
Only existing RMOs are eligible for live virtual instructor-led human skills training. This is due to the limited number of seats offered. Aspiring RMOs can access self-paced human skills courses via  this link.

Where can I access content relating to IOM’s areas of work? 

This content can be access via the Essentials of Migration Management site. 

Is Coaching and Mentoring part of the RMO learning path? 

Yes, both Coaching and Mentoring are part of the learning path. While participation is optional, it is strongly encouraged as a valuable opportunity for professional development and growth. 

At what phase of the learning path can I sign up for Coaching and Mentoring? 

After completion of the foundational phase.
