The CoM Learning Path is composed of three phases. Phases 2 and 3 are envisaged to be mandatory for all who take up CoM/HoO roles in IOM. 

 

Phase 1

  • CoM Preparatory Training – targets colleagues who are positioning themselves to take on the role of a CoM. Training focuses on: 
  1. Technical skills - UN system and IOM’s role in the UN, IOM strategies, IOM project cycle, IOM structure  
  2. Soft Skills – basic leadership skills, critical thinking, basic people and team management, self-management, cross-cultural communication, public speaking, meeting management, facilitation 

Phase 2

 

  • CoM Induction Training – is a year-long learning and development programme that targets newly appointed CoMs/HoOs who will be required to take this training within 12 months after taking on the role. Training focuses on areas needed to hit the ground running : 
  1. Technical skills - mission management (includes resources management, HR, ICT, risk, etc.), geopolitical analysis, partnerships (governments, UN, CSO, PPP), strategy development in the UN context, the UNCT, Common Agenda, etc. 
  2. Thematic skills – EMM 2.0 
  3. Soft skills - diplomacy, protocol and etiquette, advanced leadership (decision making, time management), Diversity and Inclusion, External communication (e.g., media, UN, social media), Negotiations, advanced People management 
  4. Personal development skills – Mentoring

Phase 3 

 

  • Continuous learning – this will consist of SDL offering a catalogue of training courses from which CoMs may select what is relevant for them to take. They will then be required to take 2 of these training courses per year. 
  1. Technical skills – Negotiation skills with the EU, Foresight and geopolitical analysis, Advocacy, and fundraising 
  2. Soft skills – Innovation and creativity, Change management, Self-care for CoMs, advanced Public Speaking 
  3. Thematic skills - thematic policies 
  4. Personal development skills - Coaching
